What the hell is a Plotthound?

Pegz Viz

Pegz Vizzi is a rock star. A fabulous, senior Plotthound.

She hails from Kentucky, where she was rescued (by our local Angels at Black Dog, Second Chance) in a mission to prevent mass euthanasia, along with a bunch of other pups. But it turns out that Plotthounds are the official dog of North Carolina. According to Wiki…a brindle beauty with “vicious game fighting and treeing instincts” and a “spine tingling, bugle-like call”.  A legendary hunting dog!

I can testify to the bugle-like call. It is surreal.

“Pegz” would not have been our first choice for a name, but she came with it and responds so well. I am completely astounded by her intelligence. I will go on record as saying she understands English better than most humans I know. Who am I to confuse this regal Queen by changing her name at this stage in her life?

As I watch her struggle to make the most basic of moves down steps, I imagine her in an earlier time. A time when she was whole … and healthy… and the indifference of humans was not her reality. In my mind, I see her out on the hunt on foggy southern trails, a canine goddess of focus and fierceness. Today, as she raises her head to sniff the trail of a city squirrel, I see the imperative of generations of hounds in her elegant eyes.

And so it goes. As this little Girlie Dog makes her way through the sunset of her life, we are overwhelmed by our decision to take her in … but more so by how lucky we are to have found her. ~

Well first of all, welcome to Pegz! Second, I know what a Plotthound is, and I’d love to have one! You are fortunate to have found her. And third, I also know full well the gratitude and unique bond of adopting a senior. We adopted a senior Collie several years ago and found it much different than that whole puppy business. Good in some ways, not so good in others. But tons of gratitude, both directions.

I would love to see a video of Pegz bugling her regal head off. Can you perhaps arrange that? Talk to her and see if she will help you out. She can probably read the camera instructions to you!

Thanks to all! Is there anything else my Friends from the south (or elsewhere) can tell me about Plotthounds? I am all ears. It really is an unusual breed for us in the north. This kind of info will be so helpful and much appreciated as we decide how much “mechanical” help to give her going forward.

PS> Her foster moms were in awe of her as well…she is SUPER smart and incredibly affectionate. 🙂

Wow! just wow! I love your story…even more so because we haz a Plotthound! Our Xena is a true warrior princess..she’s not a tripawd but she escaped the gas chamber by about 10 minutes (thank God I went early that day to the shelter)…came home and promptly showed signs of parvo (on Thanksgiviving day no less!) and saved me from an angry encounter with an Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake. She’s an absolute beauty and she helped to keep my husband and I from totally losing it when we went thru the loss of our girl Spammy to Osteosarcoma. She’s an “energy sponge” for good and bad, and I’ve never quite encountered a dog that has been this unique. Good luck Pegz!
Looking forward to reading more about you!! 🙂

Thanks redbud!! I SO love that your warrior princess is named Xena!! Ugh on the parvo! Our other pup was heartworm Pos when we rescued him 3 years ago…VERY frustrating and worrisome! Glad all is well. I am putting ENERGY SPONGE down on the list of characteristics …even with only 3 legs. It is appropriate!

Hi again! You’ve probably been doing your own Plott research but just in case, here’s an article from Slate online that I found recently… http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/heavy_petting/2008/02/great_plott.html

(hope I did that right…I’m not known for my computer prowess!)
